Calgary Community Spotlight: Silverado

Calgary Community Spotlight: Silverado

The young and vibrant community of Silverado is located south of downtown Calgary next to Spruce Meadows, a renowned equestrian tournament centre. This is an award-winning and diverse neighbourhood with apartments, townhomes, rowhouses, single-family homes and more. The abundant green space includes walking paths and playgrounds for children that make the neighbourhood appealing to families. There’s also a thriving community association that promotes year-round activities for residents.

One of the new and growing communities that surround the city centre, Silverado is close to Shawnessy Towne Centre, medical facilities and area schools. Nearby, the foothills of the Rocky Mountains beckon to adventurers. Walking, biking and trail-riding paths criss-cross the community, and native wildlife can be spotted in the nearby wetlands. With all the benefits of life in the suburbs, the Silverado neighbourhood is also just a 30-minute drive from the Calgary city centre.

One of the pleasant things about living in the Silverado community is having neighbours from all walks of life. The condominium homes offered by Streetside Developments are a good fit for young couples starting out. Bungalows are perfect for empty-nesters, and rowhouses are low-maintenance dwellings for those who aren’t in love with yard work. And of course, there are single-family homes in a variety of sizes and price ranges located throughout the community from reputable builders such as Baywest Homes, NuVista Homes, and Augusta Fine Homes.

Green Space

Separated from Spruce Meadows by an 80-acre nature preserve that includes a creek and wetlands, Silverado has green spaces throughout the neighbourhood that invite people to stroll, play and have picnics. Some areas retain the natural vegetation, a landscape design that helps facilitate rainwater drainage. Walking trails intersect over 40 acres of park space.

Silverado also has a community garden where residents may grow their own vegetables in a personal plot, and the extra plots are used to grow veggies for the Food Bank. The Silverado Dirt Diggers is a group that enjoys getting together to plant flowers and vegetables and work with the soil. There’s also a soccer field and hockey rink in the neighbourhood.

You can take in a show jumping tournament at the adjacent Spruce Meadows equestrian centre from January through October each year. The Silverado Community Association supports a wealth of activities that include karate, yoga, movie nights, youth and senior programs and more. There’s always a fun family event or sporting activity being staged by community volunteers in the surrounding area.

All the necessities of life are minutes away from Silverado. Doctors, dentists, schools, grocery stores, shopping, entertainment and public transportation are conveniently available nearby. The popular grocery store, Sobeys is an anchor for local shopping, along with retail stores and coffee shops, fitness centres and restaurants. There’s also a Walmart Supercentre minutes away. The Somerset Bridlewood C-Train station provides an easy commute into the city

South Fish Creek Centre

This is a unique collection of community services under one roof. Residing at the Shawnessy Town Centre, it’s the location of the local YMCA and public playing fields along with the town library, a community gymnasium and four ice skating rinks. Programs for all ages include creative writing club, engineering for kids, ice skating classes and senior programs. Hockey and combat archery are two of the sports offered.

Reasons to Love the Silverado Community

A major benefit of this neighbourhood is the access to everything your family needs to enjoy life. Many of the major shopping chains and big-box outlets are minutes away, with dining and entertainment right beside them. Local recreation and sports activities galore are nearby at the South Fish Creek Centre, and many of the schools are within walking distance. At the end of the day, you can retreat to your townhome or estate surrounded by nature’s beauty. Who could ask for more?
